PERSPECTIVES

TED which stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design is today the global benchmark for speakers and enthusiasts alike to interact for new ideas in a vast variety of fields. In order to facilitate a greater exchange of ideas, conferences under the name TEDx began to be held and are independently organised of TED. As a result, several organisations and educational institutions have benefited due to the sheer splendour of the TEDx speakers. TEDxNITKSurathkal is in its third edition this year, having previously been conducted in 2016 and 2011. The event has grown in scale each year and we expect a spectacular evening of enriching ideas this year around as well. The event is scheduled on 10th January 2018.

Our theme Perspectives perfectly encapsulates how we would like to change the manner in which our audience perceives systems around them after being exposed to new and innovative ways of thinking through our speakers. Traditional education has conditioned us to perceive problems in a particular way. This has become our approach to the rest of our lives as well. However, there is a need to step back and look at everything around us with a fresh perspective. It is only in such an environment that innovation can thrive.

About TEDx , x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia. TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self- organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities. Speakers

Our prospective speakers for this year's event

Michael Foley

A design student from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, Michael Foley joined Titan Industries as a product designer. After spending more than a decade with Titan, where he is credited with designing the hugely popular Titan ‘Edge’ and ‘Fastrack’ watches, he set up his own design studio, Foley Designs, in 2006.

Over the last eight years, the Bangalore-based designer has stamped his aesthetic sensibilities on a body of work which, more likely than not, has a place in many Indian homes, sometimes even without their owners’ knowledge. Foley has designed water purifiers for Hindustan Unilever and the understated but elegant packages for ITC’s Fiama Di Wills range of personal care products. He has built an impressive client list, which includes Microsoft, Godrej, HP, Wipro and Mindtree. He also conceptualised and created the baton for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Ashrita Vemuganti

Ashrita gained familiarity with audiences across the nation when she played the part of Devasena's sister-in-law in the S.S. Rajamouli epic, Baahubali 2. Learning dance from the age of five, Ashrita has been a part of many dance productions, picking up the nuances of emoting along the way.

The dancer has forayed into other media to experiment and widen her reach. She has anchored TV programmes, beginning with Geetanjali music show for TTD, Viswanadamrutham for ETV, interviewed director K Viswanath for Vanita TV and is currently part of Poojaku Velaye series on SVBC.

Akash Gaurav

Akash founded India’s first blockchain company, Auxesis Group during his undergraduate studies at IIT Bombay. Auxesis today is counted among The Top 100 Most Influential Blockchain Companies in the World.

Under his supervision, Auxesis has set up a Blockchain Lab in India with a dedicated team of entrepreneurs and researchers. They work together on innovations in blockchain technology to find solutions to problems faced by the masses in developing countries like India. This publicly available Blockchain infrastructure aims to act as a value chain for the Indian economy by enabling trust, transparency and efficiency in various business processes.

Revathi Roy

In love with driving from a young age, Revathi counted the days till she turned 18, and then enrolled for driving classes, which were a rarity in the 1970s. Revathi’s passion manifested in multiple ways and primary among them was ForShe (pronounced for-she), the first women taxi service in Asia.

Revathi is CEO of India’s first all-female hyperlocal delivery startup, Hey Deedee. Hey Deedee mobilises women from low-income communities, trains them to drive two-wheelers and has them undertake last-mile delivery for companies like Amazon, Pizza Hut, Subway and logistics provider Shadowfax among others. Roy is a serial entrepreneur who has been working towards empowering urban poor women since 2007. Awarded the ‘Women Transforming India Award’ in 2016 by NITI Aayog, Revathi, at 56, still enjoys driving, and as a seasoned driver and entrepreneur has weathered heavy storms.

Charan Singh

Dr. Charan Singh is full time visiting faculty and former RBI Chair Professor (Dec 2012 to Dec 2016) at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, India where he teaches comparative monetary policy; and policy issues on the Indian economy.

Sridhar Rangayan

Sridhar Rangayan wears many caps – of a filmmaker, writer, activist and festival director. He has consistently strived to give a voice to social issues in India through his films, writings and public speaking for over two decades.

His award winning films 'The Pink Mirror', 'Yours Emotionally', '68 Pages', 'Project Bolo', 'Purple Skies' and 'Breaking Free' present hard-hitting social issues with warmth, compassion and humor; and are at the forefront of India’s emergent queer cinema movement. His latest film 'Breaking Free' won the National Award for Best editing (non-fiction) and was also selected for the prestigious Indian Panorama by Directorate of Film Festivals, Government of India.

Chakshu Gupta

Chakshu Gupta is a Ground Software Engineer at TeamIndus. TeamIndus is the only Indian entrant amongst the last 5 teams in the Google Lunar XPrize competition. They are building a privately funded Spacecraft and a Rover to land on the Moon, a mission planned for early 2018.

Being part of this audacious journey since 2016, Chakshu’s typical day at work includes developing softwares for TeamIndus’s Mission Control Room –from planning, designing, developing to conducting integrated tests on the softwares, all comes under this Computer Engineer's domain. An alumnus from LNMIIT, Jaipur she strongly believes in Abdul Kalam’s words, “Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough”. Designed to be inclusive and an open mission, TeamIndus is inviting everyone to join their journey, making it truly #HarIndianKaMoonshot..

Sriram Gopal

Sriram Gopal is the founder of Future Farms, a company focusing on the nascent field of hydroponics and aquaponics and in developing farming technologies suited for tropical climates. In the current scenario of depleting water resources world over, hydroponics has an advantage over traditional farming since it consumes about 90 per cent less water, requires no pesticides, and provides better yield.

Sriram is pinning his hopes on an urban farming revolution, where the new-age farmers would be people who would be comfortable handling the computers and sensors that are part of the hydroponic set-up, and rooftops in the cities would be the harvest field.
